Useful packaging data begins with agreed machine states and trusted accepted-pack counts. A dashboard that cannot distinguish starvation, blocking, planned stops, rejects and true machine faults can create more argument than improvement.
Define the operational question before selecting the connection.
A VFFS project may expose data through existing controls, an industrial communications interface, discrete signals or additional monitoring hardware. Availability is model- and project-specific. Decide which decisions the data must support, then confirm signals, ownership, cybersecurity, retention and validation with the controls supplier.
Define running, ready, starved, blocked, planned stop, changeover, cleaning, fault, emergency stop and disconnected states. Agree how transitions are triggered and which state takes priority. Without a shared state model, OEE availability and downtime reports may not match what operators experienced.
Separate cycles, produced packs and accepted packs
A cycle counter can include empty bags, start-up waste or packs later rejected. Record gross cycles, produced packs, inspection rejects, manual rejects and accepted packs where the line can support them. State where each count originates and how counters behave after reset, recipe change or communication loss.
Use reason codes that operators can apply consistently
A long list of detailed codes often produces unreliable data. Start with a controlled hierarchy that separates machine fault, product shortage, film or packaging shortage, downstream block, quality hold, planned cleaning, changeover and maintenance. Provide a method to review unclassified time without encouraging arbitrary coding.
Plan remote diagnostics as controlled access
Remote support can reduce diagnosis time when the machine has appropriate connectivity, but access must be authorised, logged and limited. Define who can view data, who can change settings, how sessions are approved and how the connection is disabled. Read-only monitoring and control access are different risks and should not be treated as the same service.
Integrate cameras with clear operational boundaries
A fixed camera may help a remote engineer observe film tracking, product feed or an alarm condition, but it is not a safety device and must not be used to authorise unsafe intervention. Consider field of view, lighting, privacy, recording policy, bandwidth and whether the camera can reveal commercially sensitive production information.
Validate data against physical production
During FAT and commissioning, compare reported states and counts with observed events and retained production records. Test communication loss, restart, recipe change, reject events and planned stops. Document time synchronisation, data retention and the person responsible for maintaining tags or dashboards after control changes.

Does every VFFS machine provide OEE data?
No. Available signals and communication interfaces depend on the model, controls and project scope.
What is the best production count?
Use accepted packs released after the agreed controls where that count is available and validated. Keep gross cycle and reject counts separately.
Can remote monitoring change machine settings?
Only where the system is designed and authorised for control access. Read-only monitoring and write access should have different permissions and risk controls.
Is a camera a substitute for an operator or safety system?
No. A camera can support observation and diagnosis but cannot replace safeguarding, isolation or competent on-site checks.
How should OEE data be validated?
Compare reported states and counts with observed production during normal running, stops, rejects, communication loss and recipe changes.
