Which inspection systems does a VFFS line need?

A VFFS line should use inspection systems that control defined product and pack risks. Checkweighing, metal detection, vision, code verification and reject confirmation perform different jobs; none should be added as a substitute for an undefined quality requirement.

Describe what must be detected, the smallest or largest relevant deviation, where it can be observed and what the line must do after failure. The inspection point needs stable product presentation and enough distance to track the failed bag into a secure reject route. Validation should use representative accepted and defective samples.

Use checkweighing for a defined finished-pack weight decision

A checkweigher compares the completed pack with configured limits and can reject packs outside the approved range. It does not correct the upstream dose by itself unless a suitable feedback strategy has been engineered. Pack speed, spacing, conveyor stability and environmental disturbance influence the measurement.

Define whether the result is used for individual-pack rejection, process trending or both.

Treat contaminant detection as its own risk control

Metal detection and other contaminant controls depend on the product, pack and risk assessment. Their sensitivity and test method cannot be inferred from the presence of a checkweigher. The proposed detector position, product effect, pack material, aperture and line speed must be considered together.

Test pieces, challenge procedure and reject security should be part of acceptance where the system is specified.

Use vision for features that can be seen reliably

Vision may check code presence or content, label position, registration, pack shape and selected visible defects. It cannot prove every seal is leak-tight or that the dose is correct unless those features can be measured by the chosen method. Lighting, presentation and an approved defect library control the result.

Film artwork, reflections and wrinkles should be included in the validation samples.

Prove the reject path and data association

The line must associate the inspection decision with the correct bag until removal is confirmed. Define reject timing, sensor confirmation, secured collection and what happens if the bin is full or the reject mechanism fails. Where records are retained, specify how counts and reason codes link to the batch or job without assuming traceability the controls cannot support.

Repeated failures may need an alarm, hold or stop rule based on the quality plan.

Does every VFFS line need a checkweigher?

No. A checkweigher should be specified when finished-pack weight verification is required by the process or quality plan. The dosing method may already provide useful control, but that does not automatically verify every completed pack. Define the required decision, tolerance, speed, spacing and reject action before selecting the system.

When is metal detection considered separately from checkweighing?

Metal detection is considered separately whenever contaminant risk requires it, because it answers a different question from weight. The detector must suit the product, pack material, aperture and validated test method. A combined unit can share conveyors and controls, but each function still needs its own specification and acceptance evidence.

What can a vision system verify on a finished bag?

Vision can verify features that are consistently visible, such as code presence or content, label position, registration, selected dimensions, pack orientation and some visible seal-area defects. It cannot infer hidden contamination or guarantee leak integrity from appearance alone. The defect library, lighting and presentation determine what is reliable.

How should reject confirmation be specified?

Specify how the failed pack is tracked from the inspection point, the reject mechanism, a sensor proving removal, secure bin access, bin-full monitoring and the response to any failure. The test should include closely spaced packs and deliberate reject faults so the line proves that the correct bag is removed every time.

Where should inspection data be linked to the production batch?

Link data at the control-system level only where the current job or batch identifier is reliable and synchronised with the inspection event. Define what is stored, how long it is retained, who can access it and how changes are audited. Counts without a trustworthy job context should not be presented as full traceability.
