Many familiar powders can create health, fire or explosion hazards when fine material becomes airborne or accumulates. Do not select extraction, electrical equipment or an “ATEX machine” from the product name alone; start with competent material and process assessment.
Define the dust hazard before the bagger is specified.
Particle size, moisture, composition, handling method and concentration affect dust behaviour. The site duty holder should assess the substance and process under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations where applicable, then translate the resulting controls and hazardous-area requirements into the complete packing-line specification.
Obtain the current safety data sheet and any available dust explosibility or ignition data for the actual product. Similar product names do not guarantee similar behaviour, and a formulation or particle-size change can alter the risk. Record the worst credible dust condition, including fines generated during conveying, dosing or cleaning.
Map where dust can be released or accumulate
Review bag emptying, bulk transfer, screw conveying, hopper filling, agitation, auger dosing, forming-tube discharge, seal-area contamination, filter cleaning and waste collection. Include hidden ledges, enclosures and elevated structures. The assessment should distinguish normal release, foreseeable upset conditions and maintenance activities.
Use the control hierarchy
First reduce avoidable release through contained transfer, sealed joints, controlled product fall and suitable extraction. Then control ignition sources, static, hot surfaces and unsuitable equipment. Where a hazardous area is classified, equipment must be selected for the zone and material characteristics by a competent person. Explosion protection or mitigation must be engineered for the process, not added as a generic label.
Integrate extraction without disrupting dosing
Extraction must capture dust without removing saleable product, destabilising the dose or changing airflow through the forming tube. Define pickup positions, air volumes, filter location, duct cleaning, waste handling and interlocks. Trial the product at the intended refill and running conditions because dust generation can change as the hopper level and bulk density change.
Plan safe cleaning and maintenance
Avoid methods that spread settled dust into the air. Define approved vacuum equipment, isolation, access, inspection frequency and disposal. The line layout should minimise inaccessible horizontal surfaces and provide safe access to hoppers, augers, forming sets, guards, filters and conveyors. Cleaning requirements must be considered before platforms and enclosures are finalised.
Keep health exposure and product quality in scope
A dust that is not explosible may still present respiratory, sensitisation, contamination or housekeeping risks. Conversely, food-grade status does not mean a powder cannot burn or explode. Coordinate process safety, occupational hygiene, food safety and machine performance rather than treating them as separate procurement questions.
