VFFS is not automatically the best route for every flexible pack. Another method may be better when the product cannot tolerate a vertical drop, the pack is supplied pre-made, orientation must be preserved, the film cannot form and seal reliably, or the dosing problem has not yet been solved.
Direct answer
Vertical form fill seal machinery is strongest when roll-fed film can be formed around a vertical product path and sealed at the required quality. Pre-made pouch filling, horizontal form fill seal, flow wrapping, standalone filling or manual/semi-automatic methods can be more appropriate when a different requirement controls the project. The decision should be made before detailed machine comparison.
A pre-made pouch route may suit a pack with a complex zip, spout, handle, shaped profile or premium construction that is already manufactured. The machinery then needs to pick, open, hold, fill and close that pouch consistently. VFFS instead creates the pack from reel material, so the two routes have different film, changeover and handling requirements.
Do not assume a photograph of the finished pouch proves which process made it. Confirm whether the supply format is a reel or individual empty pouches.
Discrete products that must remain horizontal, arrive in a controlled pitch or cannot be dropped through a forming tube may suit horizontal wrapping or another horizontal form-fill-seal arrangement. The infeed, product length and sealing geometry then become central.
Some fragile products can still be packed vertically with controlled drop and support, but that must be demonstrated with representative product rather than assumed.
If the product bridges, separates, foams, strings or changes density so much that no stable dose is available, selecting the bagger does not remove the uncertainty. The product feed, hopper, pump, auger, weigher or conditioning step should be trialled as a process.
A standalone filling machine may also be the clearer first step where containers or pouches are already supplied and automatic bag formation is not required.
The film must unwind, track, form and seal within a practical operating range. A proposed material may have a narrow seal window, excessive curl, unsuitable friction, poor registration contrast or a barrier requirement that needs another construction. Film development and machine trials should be coordinated rather than asking settings to compensate for an unsuitable reel.
Where sustainability objectives change the film structure, repeat the forming and seal assessment before treating the material as a direct substitute.

A pre-made pouch machine is often the better route when the empty pouch already contains the controlling feature, such as a complex zip, spout, handle, shaped profile or premium construction. The machine then handles individual pouches rather than forming a pack from reel film. Suitability still depends on opening, filling and final closure trials.
Horizontal wrapping is more natural when a discrete product must keep its orientation, travel in a controlled pitch or cannot be dropped through a vertical forming tube. Product length, infeed timing and horizontal seal placement then drive the design. Compare the required finished pack and product handling rather than treating both processes as interchangeable film wrappers.
The dose may fall through a chute and forming tube, strike product already in the bag or load a fresh end seal. Breakage depends on height, velocity, piece shape, cushioning and bag support. A controlled product trial should measure acceptable damage and determine whether a gentler feed, shorter drop or another packaging orientation is required.
Solve dosing first when product variation, bridging, separation, foaming, stringing or inconsistent refill prevents a stable portion from reaching the bagger. The VFFS machine can only coordinate the dose it receives. A dosing trial can define the outlet, timing and control signal needed before the forming and sealing equipment is fixed.
Yes. A film may have unsuitable stiffness, friction, curl, registration contrast or sealant behaviour even when the product and machine concept are otherwise sound. Settings cannot always create a stable process window from an incompatible reel. Use the intended material in forming, registration and seal trials before final approval.
